Tornado Season upon the Ark-La-Tex (2/24/2006)

Local governments and the Caddo-Bossier Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness have proclaimed the week of February 19-25, 2006 as Severe Weather Awareness Week.

Tornadoes in the Ark-La-Tex are classified as devastating with wind speeds in excess of 207 mph.  These tornadoes account for most fatalities.

About 35% or tornadoes are classified as strong with wind speeds of 113-206 mph.  Approximately 30% of tornado fatalities are associated with strong tornadoes.

Fortunately, 63% of all tornadoes are classified as weak, with wind speeds less than 112 mph.  These weak tornadoes cause only 2% of tornado fatalities.
